One of the biggest high school sporting events in Northeast Oklahoma is taking place on Friday night in Nowata.

Nowata gets set to host Dewey in an early-season basketball rivalry double-header.

The two schools did not play each other in football for the first time since the 1960s this fall, so this will be the first major sport matchup between the two high schools this school year. The game is named after former KRIG sports broadcaster Adam Wayne Hooper.

The contest will be the second of the season for Dewey. The Bulldoggers are 1-0 after a win over Sperry on Tuesday night. Dewey head coach Lance Knight says this will be one that Bulldogger fans travel to.

Meanwhile on the Nowata side of things, the Ironmen are beginning their season this evening. Nowata is under the direction of head coach Derrick Ott for the second season.

Ott talks about what this game means to people in Nowata.

Dewey won both matchups in the series last year, but only by a combined five points. Bulldoggers coming off a 16-12 season a year. Nowata debuts a similar team to a season ago that went 12-15.

Girls tip at 6:00 with the boys to follow at 8:00 on Friday night on KRIG 104.9 and KRIGTV.com.

Pregame will start around 7:00 with Alex Benzegala on the call.
